Throwing in some living room lighting fixtures might not be the best idea if you need bright light next to a chair. Or a couple of living room lamps may not be enough ambient light to fill a family room for your next Super Bowl party. You might even just have the wrong type of lamp shades attached for your needs.
Get the popular industrial look for less. Very basic pendant lamps (even just exposed bulbs) can be rigged to vintage barn pulleys from the flea market for a high-end rustic look—on a budget. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even swing by the hardware store to pick up the items you need to wire the bulbs on your own.
Over a kitchen island: Clear, ribbed or colored glass as well as metals all can make a statement, especially in multiples. Consider the proportions of your island. Like placement over a dining table, the pieces should neither overpower nor underwhelm. A single four-inch pendant would seem too small and not put out enough light. Hanging a pair of pendants with a 4-foot drop might measure around 42 inches from the surface of a 39-inch tall counter that spans around 72 inches.
Living rooms often feature only recessed can lights and a few table lamps. But why are we depriving our living rooms, the spaces we entertain in and relax in, of a stunning statement light? Whether you have a separate living room or not, try hanging a light over your coffee table or sectional. Decorative fixtures are the jewelry of the home, so why not add a few more?
