This is when the mistake can happen. You get that awesome new floor lamp and set it up and it looks so cool and then it gets dark and you realize it’s really just a task light and only provides lighting in one direction and makes that dark corner even scarier with all the shadows its creating.
Identify the existing colors in your room – and the color of any metal accents. This will typically be your palette. Try to stick to 3 main colors at most. Occasionally, if you have a monochromatic color scheme (1 basic color), you might use a floor lamp to introduce another color. Choosing a metal such as silver, brass, gold, bronze is also a good option. If your walls are white – you may want to consider using a lampshade that is a little darker so that there is some contrast to the wall.
