Identify the existing colors in your room – and the color of any metal accents. This will typically be your palette. Try to stick to 3 main colors at most. Occasionally, if you have a monochromatic color scheme (1 basic color), you might use a floor lamp to introduce another color. Choosing a metal such as silver, brass, gold, bronze is also a good option. If your walls are white – you may want to consider using a lampshade that is a little darker so that there is some contrast to the wall.
It’s crucial to have good ambient lighting in a space. Hopefully you’ve got your table lamps covered (at least two), but then you need a floor lamp for that dead, dark corner. You start to gather inspiration and see all these images with really cool, sculptural floor lamps. It can be so easy to get caught up in how great it will look AND fill out that space, it’s almost like a piece of art!
