From enclosed courtyards, city centre balconies to tree covered vistas, it’s easier than you think to create a cosy corner or the ultimate party space. The trick is to keep it simple. Layer your lights to frame your area and introduce a warm glow. Hang festoons and Chinese lanterns high, place garden lanterns on the floor and wrap fairy lights around your trellis and trees. Textiles soften up the space instantly, a few soft blankets and cushions and your new alfresco living room is complete!
Lighting has more of an impact than you may think. It’s no longer just a safety element, it’s a decorative element. With different styles, sizes, colors, and placements, lighting fixtures have the ability to make a difference in the home’s appearance.
Adding lighting beyond the typical one or two lights can provide extra security as well, especially if they’re motion sensored or automatically light up when the sun goes down.
Buy lighting fixtures which are hooded so that you can be directional with the light and avoid ’washing’ over an unnecessarily large area. Get three lights and circle them around the tree, rather than have them all illuminating the front. Note too that placing uplighters in trees also adds more of a sense of height to a space.
